Using the Decision Support Tool

Why should I use the DST when I can use AI?

The Decision Support Tool works with real numbers given by precisely defined operating windows for each remediation technology.

While AI tools can help students or early career professionals generate structured reports or initial drafts for decision or recommendations, they often fall short when it comes to providing sound rationale or robust supporting evidence. In many cases, AI-generated references are either incorrect, outdated, or not contextually relevant. Also while it’s easy for AI to produce an answer, its limitations become evident during in depth discussions when a balanced, evidence-based perspective is required. This makes AI a useful starting point as a prompt, rather than a conclusion. In that sense, the DST (Decision Support Tool) is best viewed as a support to guide early-career professionals to critically engage with and evaluate the initial DST outputs to reach well-informed decisions.

The Decision Support Tool is intended to provide initial screening for remediation options. It can be applied to a full site, specific zone of a site or a specific source-pathway-receptor linkage (pollutant linkage).

The tool can be used to demonstrate how modifying site conditions can change the list of suitable remediation technologies and equally, why some technologies are not suitable for the given site conditions. Useful for:

  • professionals, as an interactive support when presenting to stakeholders;
  • educators and learners, including early career professionals;
  • regulators, who may benefit from the reports;
  • stakeholders, to understand why certain technologies may be unsuitable for the site conditions.

The Enquiry Panel is available for more detailed discussion of complex issues.
